HOW TO PREPARE YOUR AIR FREIGHT PRIOR TO LODGING
So that CargoMaster can move your goods quickly and safely its important you understand the type of product you intend to ship.Following below will ensure your air cargo moves quickly and damage fee.
Understanding air freight Hazards
You should understand the dangers/hazards when consigning air freight:
- Poor packaging can cause items to shift punctures are a big hazard and should be avoded ar all costs.Insufficent packaging causes punctures anbd other damage
- Compression: stacking, shock, vibration, or tie-down straps all generate compressive forces that can cause product damage.
- Shipment handling: proper packaging must be able to protect the contents from the drops and impacts that are common with handling operations.
All of the above can be avoided by taking time to package your goods well.
Packing Materials Perfect for Air Freight Shipments
Using Corrugated Fiberboard boxes:
Commonly mislabeled as cardboard cartons or boxes. CFB’s are the most commonly used shipping container, but an overwhelming majority of people are unaware of the package’s strengths and weaknesses. The greatest point of compression on the box is within 1” of the edges that are created by two of the adjacent panels.
CFB can also degrade over time– by up to 50% of its strength within 6 months. A humidity of 90% has the ability to weaken CFB packaginging by as much as 60%. These often aren’t strong enough to be reused and should be treated as single use packages.
Wood packaging for Air Freight
Crafting your shipment for air freight can help protect your goods, allowing for damage-free transit if done properly. Here are some do’s and don’ts of packaging with wood:
- Try using interlocking corners on wooden crates
- Don’t put fasteners into the end grain of wood– fastener resistance can be reduced by 35% when placed in the endgrain; place them in the side or edge grain of your container
- Knots should not be larger than 30% of the surface area they appear in
- Do not place fasteners in knots
- Use diagonal braces on each panel to increase strength
Air Freight Pallets
Pallets are commonly made out of either wood or plastic. Pallets make moving packages more efficient by assisting in the consolidation and handling of packages. Using pallets also allows shipments to be moved without direct contact to packages, reducing exposure to damage. Here’s some things to note about air freight pallets:
- Pallets should be large enough to accommodate shipments without overhang
- Broken pallets should not be used
- Protruding fasteners should be removed before packages are placed on pallet.
- Pallets on any shipment are required to have a floor-bearing load of more than 100 lbs per square foot.
- Know the rated capacity of your pallet; never exceed it.
Following these general best standards will keep your international shipments safe and secure while using air freight. It’s a good idea to properly cushion goods as well as to reduce the effect that shock has on your goods.

Unit Load Devices (ULD)
As of January 2023, over one million ULD’s are in service world-wide ULD or Unit Load Device can be in the form of a aircraft pallet, a pallet /net combination or a aircraft container. Unit Load Devices are considered removable parts of an aircraft and come under the control of civil aviation authorities. For a ULD to be airworthy it must be structurally strong and able to restrain loads and provide protection to aircraft systems and aircraft structure during its flight.
ULD’s are regularly tested to ensure they conform to aviation authority design standards.
ULDs are considered an aircraft part and are the only aircraft parts that can be removed from the aircraft and be returned after being handled by unregulated operators, ULD’s are considered to directly contribute to flight safety.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS CALLERS ASK ABOUT AIR FREIGHT
“Simply call CargoMaster 24/7, for urgent air freight bookings. Call 1300 767 136 24/7 Australia-Wide”
“What documentation do I need when consigning Air Freight.”
“This will depend on the destination of your cargo and what your air cargo is. If you have domestic air freight,t you will need to declare the goods on a con note as NON HAZ or HAZ cargo. A packing list is always helpful too. If you have international air freight you will need to organise a airway bill. Call CargoMaster Freight Forwarders for domestic air freight and international air freight”
“What is the difference between air cargo and air freight.”
“No difference at all, just different name for the same thing. We notice the term “Air Cargo” seems to be used more in the USA and “Air Freight” is more commonly used in Australia. The terms air freight and air cargo are simply a description of how the goods will be transported or have been transported.”
“How is air freight cost calculated.”
“Air freight is calculated based on the “chargeable weight” of the goods. In air freight terms chargeable weight will either be the “volumetric weight” or the “actual (dead weight)” whichever is the greater. In other words, if your cargo is big ,bulky cargo but is very light then it is most likely your cargo will be charged at the “volumetric weight”, on the other hand if you have really heavy cargo, for example a piece of lead weighing 50kg but is only the size of a brick, then it would be charged at the “actual or dead weight”, because the shipment would be heavy but relatively small.”
“How much is the air freight rate per ton.”
“Air freight is normally charged at per kilogram rate, so whatever the kilogram rate is times 1000 will give you the air freight rate per ton. In relation to international air freight sliding rates per kilogram will apply. If you have over 1000 kilograms of air freight call CargoMaster for special spot rate deals for air freight rates per kilogram”
THE IMPORTANCE OF AIR FREIGHT DIMENSIONS
It is important that you provide the dimensions of your cargo when seeking an air freight quote. Providing the exact dimensions will help to ensure you get an accurate quote and your freight will move quickly without hold ups due to misunderstanding about cargo size. Dimensions are important when utilizing air freight services, dimensions help to establish if the cargo is volumetric and if the cargo will fit into the aircraft. Dimensions can be provided in millimeters, centimeters and meters.
All aircraft are different in terms of the size of the cargo they can carry. CargoMaster can help you with finding an aircraft suitable for your air cargo.
In Australia air freight is carried in several different types of aircraft. The main types or aircraft moving Australian domestic cargo are 737, 767, A320 and A330.
Dimensions (dims) include:
- The measurements of the cargo (length by width by height)
- Weight of the cargo
- The number of pieces, count (i.e., cartons)
It’s impossible to provide an accurate quote without the correct dimensions. Because it’s difficult to calculate if the cargo will be moving in a passenger plane or a cargo-only plane (called “freighters”). Acceptable dimensions vary depending on which type of plane your cargo is being loaded into. Below is a chart showing maximum cargo height, length, and width for each type of aircraft.
THE HEIGHT
follow these guidelines when considering maximum cargo height:
LENGTH AND WIDTH
CargoMaster has access to special equipment allowing for loading of larger type air freight cargo dimensions for standard air freight are 2.44 x 3.15m (96 x 125 in). Longer/wider cargo can be transported but may need to be packed on special equipment.
Outsize cargo may require special charter services.
